Training objective
The aim of this training course is to provide participants with practical knowledge in the area of identifying, assessing and hedging currency risk, using financial instruments available to:
- exporters,
- importers,
- borrowers.
During the meeting, we will also discuss the principles of valuation of derivative instruments quoted on the interbank market.

- become familiar with the full spectrum of tools for risk hedging (FX Forward, options, FX Swap, IRS and others),
- understand the mechanisms of valuation of derivative instruments on the interbank market,

- practise, on examples, the valuation and settlement of derivative transaction portfolios, including cases of negative valuation and their impact on financial reporting.

Scope of the training
The programme includes, among others:
Functioning of the interbank market
– the foreign exchange market (Spot transactions, FX, currency exchange platforms, turnover),
– the money market (interbank deposits, FX deposits, short–term debt instruments),
– exchange–traded and over–the–counter derivatives markets,
– economic and non–economic factors affecting the valuation of financial instruments,
– overview of forecasts prepared by economists and financial institutions.
Introduction to the valuation of instruments on the interbank market
– FX Forward contracts,
– currency options (vanilla, barrier, Asian),
– FX Swap transactions.
Specifics of currency derivatives offered to bank clients
– swap points curve and its impact on forward valuation,
– NDF transactions, rollback and rollover in practice,
– strategies based on currency options.
Hedging derivative transactions
– framework and collateral agreements, MiFID suitability test,
– limits for derivative transactions and the procedure for granting them,
– market valuation of transaction portfolios.
Other tools an risk management practice
– dual–currency deposits as a cash–flow management tool,
– investment deposits using binary options,
– accounting risk vs cash (cash–flow) risk – different approaches to risk management,
– use of information systems (Bloomberg, Reuters and others) in practice.
The programme is complemented by practical exercises, including sample client exposures and transaction valuations:
- FX Forward, FX Swap,
- currency options (Call, Put, option strategies for exporters and importers),
- IRS transactions (interest rate swaps).
Trainer – Dr Hubert Łąkowski
Doctor of Economic Sciences, graduate of the Poznań University of Life Sciences, with doctoral studies completed at the Faculty of Economics of the Poznań University of Economics and Business.
He currently works in the Financial Markets Sales Department as a Senior Specialist in Derivatives Sales. He began his career on the financial markets in 2013 as a corporate dealer, serving corporate clients in the area of financial market transactions. He has gained experience, among others, at PKO Bank Polski and Bank Zachodni WBK.
He has been conducting training courses continuously since 2013. He constantly improves his skills by participating in numerous courses and training programmes in corporate finance and financial markets. His main professional interests include: risk management, economic and financial analysis of enterprises, banking and financial markets.
